Duke of Kent School Science Department aims to instil a lifelong interest and enthusiasm for science. Lessons are engaging and offer an ever-increasing range of practical work and demonstrations to underpin scientific theory. GCSE students have the option to study Combined Science (two GCSE’s) or Separate Science (three GCSE’s) dependent on academic performance and passion for science. 

All students benefit from enrichment activities designed to stretch and challenge. This includes house competitions, dissections beyond those required by the curriculum and escape room problem solving. We celebrate Biology week, Science week and significant anniversaries such as International Year of the Periodic Table with exciting activities and events.

Recent visits to the Royal Institution in London, local Universities and an Aspiring Medics workshop have enabled GCSE pupils to explore research labs and hear inspirational lectures from working scientists. Selected students take part in Salters’ Science Challenges annually and the department uses Skype and live screening to access scientists and science debates from the classroom. With visits from Medical Mavericks and a pop-up planetarium at school, there is a range of opportunities to support learning and spark interest across the scientific disciplines.
