History

The principal objective of History teaching at Duke of Kent School is to stimulate interest, excitement and awareness of the past. Our rigorous and engaging approach gives each student the knowledge, understanding and skills that will help them to interpret the present and provide them with a solid foundation for their role as a responsible citizen in the future.

Our comprehensive syllabus enables our students to develop a chronological overview that empowers them to make connections within and across different periods and societies. They develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding that will help them to value the full breadth of cultures in modern Britain.

Our energetic and dynamic team work hard to intensify students' curiosity and imagination, moving and inspiring them with the dilemmas, choices and beliefs of people in the past. We want to encourage them to grapple with the issues of the present by engaging them with those of the past.

GCSE History

GCSE History at Duke of Kent School engages students actively in the process of historical enquiry in order to develop them as effective and independent learners, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds. Our focus is on active participation and lessons include lively debates and discussion. Our students make excellent use of iPads and Chromebooks to support independent research and to present their knowledge in innovative and creative ways.

The History Department has a good collection of resources for historical study and teachers are happy to recommend reading on any topic to individual students. This is particularly important for those who will go on to study History at A Level, but it is our aim that all students will leave with a lifelong interest.
