Geography is a vast and fascinating subject, exploring how places and landscapes are formed, how people and the environment interact, and how a diverse range of economies and societies are interconnected. It inspires pupils to think about their own place in the world, their values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and the sustainability of our planet.

The study of Geography at Duke of Kent School helps students make sense of the complex and dynamic world around them and prepares them to be global citizens in the 21st Century. We want to stimulate an interest in the subject and a sense of wonder about places.

Building on the students' personal experiences is vital to encourage an understanding of the topics we cover. With this in mind, fieldwork is an essential element of Geography at Duke of Kent School. Geography GCSE students complete a detailed study of the Lulworth coastline in Dorset, and a sustainability study in Southampton on a two day Field Trip, while the Year 8 students complete a study on our local river.

At Duke of Kent School we aim to ensure that the teaching of Geography is varied and exciting and that many different skills are learnt such as decision-making, data analysis, producing ICT presentations and actively taking part in structured discussions.

We feel strongly that Geography should be accessible and stimulating for all pupils, whatever their particular strengths. Geography is a popular subject here at GCSE and we are also delighted to see a large number of our students continuing to study the subject at A Level.
