The English Department at Duke of Kent School delivers dynamic and differentiated teaching from Year 3 to Year 11.The English syllabus focuses on the requirement of all pupils to achievement an excellent standard in all aspects of the subject: reading, writing, speaking and listening. We aim to provide a sound grounding in literacy skills, while at the same time engendering an enjoyment of the subject by incorporating literary analysis, creative work and media texts. A thorough programme developing skills and knowledge with reference to the National Curriculum, the National Literacy Strategy, GCSE and IGCSE specifications allows pupils to progress and achieve excellent standards no matter what their starting point. We work closely with the Learning Development Department to ensure all pupils are stretched and challenged in all the right areas, whilst essential support is carefully co-ordinated.

At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) pupils follow a programme that prepares them thoroughly for GCSE study and beyond. Pupils study prose, poetry, drama, non-fiction and media, gaining a breadth of experience across each year and enjoying texts from a wide range of cultures. As well as specific literacy and grammar lessons pupils are encouraged to share their experiences and love of reading. We have a wide range of fiction available in comfortable reading areas and pay close attention to finding the right book for every pupil from the most voracious to the most reluctant reader.

Confidence is key to success in this subject and throughout the Senior School pupils are given the confidence to communicate and shine. From daily opportunities to answer questions and express opinions in class to competitive interschool public speaking, we believe that our pupils should have the belief and the skills to converse and persuade in any arena.

Outside the classroom a range of stimulating events and activities complement the curriculum. Recent highlights have included celebrations for World Book Day, drama workshops at the Globe and National Theatre.

IGCSE English Language and English Literature

In years 10 and 11 students follow the IGCSE courses in English Language and English Literature. The courses are taught in parallel and result in two separate IGCSEs. The syllabus exposes pupils to good literature in English from a range of different cultures. The programme of study is carefully tailored to give our students the best chance for success in the exams, and to promote lifelong learning and literacy. The IGCSE English Literature course fosters an appreciation of classic and contemporary prose and poetry.
